About our information
The Soak Atlas brings together details on hot springs from public sources: land managers and park agencies, the springs' own websites, and open datasets such as OpenStreetMap. Each listing links to the sources we used.
Conditions at hot springs change, sometimes quickly. Water temperature and quality, trails, roads, opening hours, fees, closures and access rules can all differ from what a page showed when we last read it. Natural springs are not tested or supervised, and some water can be too hot or carry organisms that are harmful to swallow or breathe in.
We share this information to help you plan, and we can't be responsible for the condition of any spring, for access to it, or for what happens on a visit. Before you go, please check current access, closures, water safety and the land manager's rules with the source, and leave the spring as you found it.
Water safety
In natural springs, keep your head above the water and test the temperature before you get in. Public health and park sources explain why:
- Naegleria fowleri, a rare but nearly always fatal brain-infecting ameba, “thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs.” CDC advice: “Always keep your head above water in hot springs.” CDC, Naegleria fowleri Infections (page dated July 21, 2025) · read 2026-10-15
- Thermal water can scald. In Yellowstone, “Burns from thermal features are a common cause of serious injury and death in the park” and “it is illegal to swim or bathe in any water that is entirely of thermal origin.” We exclude springs inside Yellowstone, Lassen Volcanic and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes national parks. Information only, not safety advice. Conditions, access, fees and closures change without notice, and water temperature and quality are not monitored by us. You soak at your own risk: check the status link and posted rules on site before you go. We accept no liability for injury, loss or trespass.
